Yileen Canyon

Grade: Medium–Hard | Distance: 8 km | Time: 8 hrs | Max group size: 4 | Meeting Point: Mt Wilson, 8.00 am

About This Canyon

Legend has it that Yileen is an Aboriginal word meaning dream, and it sure is a dreamy day out! This popular canyon is spectacular. Crystal clear cool water running through fern and moss-lined green slots and dark constrictions. There are five abseils, a few short swims, and the final two abseils (40m and 10m) looking down into the Grose Valley far below are breathtaking! We drop a car near the exit point which makes the walk out shorter than most other Blue Mountains canyons, so this is generally not as big a day out as some canyons.

The Experience

Meet at Mt Wilson for morning tea or coffee while you are kitted out for the day, collecting your safety gear, a wetsuit and a backpack. Then it’s a short 10 min drive to the start of the track. We do a quick car shuffle, leaving a vehicle at our exit point, then set off walking through the bush along a ridgeline with spectacular views across the Grose Valley before descending towards the start of the canyon.

At the head of the creek we change into our wetsuits before heading in between the rock walls and into the fern-lined slot, scrambling down rocks and along the creek with occasional short swims and abseils. We pause somewhere convenient to have our gourmet lunch at the creek’s edge. Then we approach the final section, with an abseil into a dark crack in the rocks, less than a metre wide and 12 m down, then around the corner for the awesome last 40m and 10m abseils into the Grose Valley.

After changing back into our dry clothes we head across a narrow track back to the main walking track to Pierces Pass where a car is waiting.

With a maximum group size of just 4, Yileen Canyon delivers an intimate, high-support experience ideal for those seeking a challenge in the Grose Valley wilderness area.
