Gobsmacker Canyon
Grade: Medium–Hard | Distance: 8 km | Time: 8 hrs | Max group size: 6 | Meeting Point: Mt Wilson, 8.00 am
Prepare for a truly unforgettable adventure through one of the Blue Mountains’ most dramatic slot canyons. Gobsmacker—also known as the Bowens Creek North Lower section—offers an immersive full-day canyoning experience filled with deep, atmospheric passages, sculpted sandstone and moments where the canyon walls close in to create near-darkness.
This is a trip for adventurous, confident canyoners. Across the day you’ll tackle four exciting abseils, each dropping you deeper into the winding gorge. Depending on water levels and group preference, there are also optional jumps that add an extra burst of adrenaline for those keen to push themselves.
Because the canyon is narrow and shaded, temperatures can be cooler than other Mt Wilson canyons, making this trip best enjoyed in the warmer months.
The exit is steep and challenging, requiring determination and a good level of fitness. You’ll climb a handline-assisted scramble, and for your safety and comfort we’ll secure you on a top rope during this section. Once above the canyon rim, the trail eases off and offers time to catch your breath as you make your way back toward Mt Wilson.
With a maximum group size of just 6, Gobsmacker Canyon delivers an intimate, high-support experience ideal for those seeking a bigger challenge in an extraordinary environment.
